Dr. Nimrat Bawa,

Dr. Nimrat Bawa has broad responsibilities ranging from setting up the diagnostic and research laboratories, safety and quality assurance and timely and accurate reporting of tests.
Dr. Bawa has developed and standardized the first PCR based HIV assay for Indian strains of the virus in 1990 and has carried out these studies at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, from where she has done her MBBS and MD in Microbiology. During her MBBS she was sent by AIIMS on an internship to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, USA and worked at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, where she worked with renowned scientists. Her research resulted in several publications in internationally acclaimed medical journals. Dr. Bawa came back to India and did her MD in Microbiology in AIIMS during which she standardized the first ever PCR assay for HIV-1 & 2 on Indian strains of virus. She went on to develop modifications of the PCR assay so that it could be used in primary health care laboratories with minimal equipment and at low costs. This work was presented at the 7th International Conference on AIDS in 1991, where Dr. Bawa was the youngest delegate to present a paper. The University of Wisconsin invited her to join a Residency Program in Clinical Pathology at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison, WI, USA in 1992. On her arrival Dr. Bawa expressed her desire to continue her work in research, besides doing the duties of a busy Pathology resident. The University decided to tailor make the first ever Clinical Pathology residency program in their hospital so that Dr. Bawa could continue with her research and academic interests. She qualified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology in 1995. She has to her credit several publications, review articles and a chapter in a book edited by Dr. J. Bernard Henry on Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods, which is a bible for Clinical Pathologists the world over.
Dr. Bawa returned to India in 1996, with the dream of making available to her countrymen state-of-the-art pathology diagnostic tests of the highest quality possible to the maximum number possible. With endeavour in mind she provided consultancy services to Dr. Lal Pathlabs Pvt. Ltd., to develop their Reference Laboratories. This service was sending samples to the US for specialized testing. Dr. Bawa was convinced about the importance of doing these tests in India with excellent test result at affordable cost on timely services. Dr. Bawa as Chairperson has set up and managed state-of-the-art Reference Laboratories, for Molecular and Cellular diagnosis, for Dr. Lal Pathlabs Pvt. Ltd. In India, this facility was the first of its kind, where Dr. Bawa was instrumental in introducing a number of first ever pathology diagnostic tests. It is now Dr. Bawa has established Auroprobe Laboratories wherein diagnostic assays using modern and innovative tools and techniques will be developed and standardized, to bring to the people of India the best and latest in diagnostic testing at lower costs, particularly for pathogens and strains peculiar to the Indian subcontinent.
